Peter C. Thoms, CFA
Founder & Portfolio Manager
Peter Thoms is the founder and portfolio manager of Africa Capital Group LLC. He has a nearly life-long association with and interest in Africa. As the son of a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, he attended high school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in the early 1980s. In the decades since then he has traveled independently throughout Africa, covering tens of thousands of miles over land through dozens of countries.
Mr. Thoms is also the founder and managing member of Orion Capital Management LLC, a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) based in Coronado, California. The firm, founded in 2002, is an independent fiduciary with a diverse base of clients that includes individuals, families, trust, non-profit organizations and corporate retirement plans.
Earlier in his investment career, Mr. Thoms was Co-Portfolio Manager and Research Analyst in New York City at PIMCO Equity Advisors, L.P., a unit of Pacific Investment Management Company LLC (PIMCO) of Newport Beach, California. From 1999 to early 2002 he was a Research Analyst for the $1.5 billion PIMCO Growth Fund, a large-cap growth mutual fund, and the $1.5 billion PIMCO Target Fund, a mid-cap growth mutual fund. In the later half of his tenure he was also the Co-Portfolio Manager of the PIMCO Growth & Income Fund.
Before joining PIMCO, Mr. Thoms served as an Investment Analyst at Federated Global Investment Management, the New York City-based global investing unit of Pittsburgh-based Federated Investors. He analyzed investments for the Federated Global Equity Income Fund, the Federated World Utility Fund, and two pension accounts that were benchmarked against global equity indexes.
Mr. Thoms holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is a member of the CFA Institute. He earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in 1998 and his Bachelor of Arts degree in International & Comparative Political Studies from Hamilton College in 1989.
From 1989 to 1993, Mr. Thoms served as a U.S. Naval Flight Officer aboard the P-3 Orion, an anti-submarine warfare and surveillance aircraft. He was stationed at Naval Air Station, Barbers Point, Hawaii.
Jan P. Schalkwijk, CFA
Jan Schalkwijk, a portfolio manager at Africa Capital Group LLC, is also the founder and Chief Investment Officer of JPS Global Investments, a money management firm specializing in green investing on a global basis. Through his work on the advisory board of a frontier markets fund, family ties to Africa, and personal travels, Mr. Schalkwijk has formed a conviction in the investment potential of Africa.
Mr. Schalkwijk has 18 years of experience in the investment industry. Prior to founding JPS Global Investments he was vice president of investment platforms at Franklin Templeton. Based out of Templeton’s global equity research office in Fort Lauderdale, Mr. Schalkwijk worked on the firm’s international equity products in various roles including product management, business development, and client service.
Mr. Schalkwijk received his Propadeuse degree in Economics from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, his Bachelor of Science degree from Menlo College in Atherton, California and his Master of Business Administration from Santa Clara University. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is a member of the CFA Institute. Mr. Schalkwijk is an active member of the CFA Society of Portland, Oregon.
Ryan L. Hoover
Director of Research
Ryan Hoover’s investment career has focused on Africa. He holds nearly a decade of experience buying and selling securities on exchanges in many African countries, including South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mauritius and Malawi. Over the years, his views have appeared in a variety of publications, including Barron’s, the Wall Street Journal, and Financial Post. His strong interest in and affinity for Africa stem from the three years he spent as a volunteer in Lesotho in the late 1990s.
In 2006, Mr. Hoover founded the Investing In Africa newsletter and published it for four years. He sold the letter to both institutional and private investors.
In 2008, he co-launched the Kivuno Africa Fund, a private investment fund that invested exclusively in stocks listed in Sub-Saharan Africa and focused on companies linked to the rise of the African consumer. The fund’s investors were primarily U.S. high net worth individuals.
In addition to his work at Africa Capital Group LLC, Mr. Hoover is also the editor of InvestingInAfrica.net, a popular and well-known online guide to African stock markets.
Mr. Hoover holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Eastern Mennonite University.
